NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The venue was a little different, but the accomplishments were just as remarkable.
On Tuesday, Vanderbilt staged an "alternative graduation" for a dozen students in the Board of Trust room at the university's Student Life Center. The event served as recognition of sorts for 12 graduating seniors who missed last week's campus Commencement ceremonies due to athletic obligations.
Tuesday's group featured eight athletes from the Commodores' track and field team: Reagan Anderson, Sarah Bell
, Carmen Carlos, Simone Charley, Sarah Goodale
, Courtney Kriegshauser, Tierney Price
and Katie Watts
. Likewise, baseball student-athletes Ro Coleman
and Jason Delay
and baseball student managers Josh Ruchotzke and Ben Sampson had their degrees conferred by Vanderbilt Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos.
Zeppos, along with Vice Chancellor for Athletics and University Affairs and Athletics Director David Williams II, addressed the graduates alongside their families, teammates and coaches. Zeppos described the student-athletes as "remarkable young people" who, no matter their background, are now forever bound by Vanderbilt.
