Vanderbilt run-rules Lipscomb in seven innings

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt run-ruled Lipscomb 15-4 in seven innings Tuesday night at Ken Dugan Field.

The Commodores scored four runs in both the first and third innings and six runs in the fifth to pull away. Four different Commodores posted a multi-hit night led by Jayden Davis and Matthew Polk with three hits each. Davis drove in three runs along with Logan Poteet, who hit a three-run homer. Davis also scored three times to pace the offense.

On the mound, Brennan Seiber picked up the win with three innings of work. The freshman totaled five strike outs and didn’t allow an earned run.

Vanderbilt struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. RJ Austin was hit by a pitch and Davis Diaz worked a walk to put a pair on with one out. Braden Holcomb then knocked a single through the left side to score Austin from second.

Davis made it 2-0 with a single that allowed Diaz to come around from second and Polk followed with a third consecutive hit, this time scoring Holcomb to give Vandy a three-run lead in the first.

Vanderbilt capped off the inning Davis scoring on an error to give the Commodores a 4-0 lead.

Lipscomb answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on one hit and a pair of errors. Both runs were unearned.

Jonathan Vastine hit his 12th double on the season with one out in the top of the second. He reached third on a groundout and came home on a wild pitch.

Seiber struck out the side in the bottom of the second to keep the score 5-2 heading into the third.

For the second time, Vanderbilt would push four runs across in an inning. Davis singled with one out in the top of the third and back-to-back doubles by Polk and Troy LaNeve brought Davis home. Poteet then launched his third home run on the season, a three-run shot to left, to make it 9-2.

An error and a pair of singles loaded the bases for Vanderbilt in the top of the fifth. With one out, Camden Kozeal drove a fly ball to the warning track in right, scoring Davis on the sac fly. The inning continued with a double by Vastine, his second of the evening, scoring both Polk and LaNeve. Another error allowed Vastine to touch home on a fielder’s choice as the Dores took a 13-2 lead.

Davis collected two more RBI on a bases-loaded single with two outs to give Vandy a 15-2 advantage after a six-run fifth inning.

The Bisons cut into the deficit with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth.

Levi Huesman registered two scoreless innings in relief and Alex Kranzler worked two innings, striking out four.

The Commodores return to Hawkins Field after four consecutive road games to host Florida for a three-game series beginning Thursday. Game 1 against the Gators will air on ESPNU and Game 2 will be on ESPN2. The series finale on Saturday will stream on SEC Network +.
